A Journey from Personal Experiences to a Career in Physical Therapy

Growing up in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, I was always fascinated by sports and human potential. This passion led me to become a world-renowned physical therapist, a path deeply influenced by my personal experiences with pain and illness.

At an early age, I excelled in gymnastics, but a bone defect forced me to give up the sport I loved. Life threw another curveball at 17 years old when I developed toxic shock syndrome, a life-threatening condition that caused my internal organs to shut down. After hospitalization and extensive rehabilitation, I emerged with a determination to help guide others through physical challenges.

My academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a minor in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Driven by my interest in neurological conditions, I earned my Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Concordia University Wisconsin.

After graduation, I worked as a travel physical therapist. The opportunity to work in different facilities every 3 months enriched my clinical experience by immersing me in a variety of medical settings across Wisconsin. My expertise caught the attention of a prosthetics company that recruited me as an in-house consultant. This role provided me with the opportunity to work at the forefront of prosthetics technology, addressing phantom limb pain and other complex neurological conditions.

One patient's story particularly resonated with me. A stroke survivor suffering from post-stroke thalamic pain syndrome experienced unrelenting, burning pain. As a dedicated physical therapist in Oshkosh, I delved into research on neuromodulation technologies and stumbled upon a published clinical trial that mentioned the Calmare Scrambler Therapy device.

Intrigued by this innovative approach, I quickly studied the available literature pertaining to the Calmare device, developed by Professor Giuseppe Marineo at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Inspired by the potential of this technology, I became an advocate for its use in treating chronic pain.

My personal experiences, academic pursuits, and clinical practice have shaped my approach to physical therapy. I believe in empowering patients to understand their conditions and advocate for themselves when dealing with the medical system.

Today, I continue to explore the latest advancements in physical therapy, seeking new and effective ways to alleviate pain and restore function. My passion for helping others remains deeply rooted in my personal journey, fueled by the desire to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals facing the most complex neurological and physical challenges.
